Dr. Alan J. Singerman (Ph.D. Indiana University 1970) is Richardson Professor Emeritus of French at Davidson College in Davidson, NC.  He also holds a Master’s degree in film studies from the Université de Montpellier in France (1985).  He taught French Cinema at Davidson College from the late 1980s to his retirement in 2007, was the organizer and first coordinator (2004-2007) of the Film & Media Studies Concentration at Davidson, and has taught Introduction to Film and Media Studies there. He has produced numerous papers and articles on French cinema and is the author of a textbook in French on classical French cinema, Apprentissage du cinéma français. Livre de l’Etudiant (2004), and its translation into English, French Cinema. The Student’s Book (2006). In fall 2017, he and a coauthor, Michèle Bissière of UNC-Charlotte, brought out a new textbook in French on contemporary French cinema, Le Cinéma français contemporain: Manuel de classe, whose English translation, Contemporary French Cinema: A Student’s Book, appeared in fall 2018.

Dr. Singerman has also presided, since its inception in 2013, the Davidson Film Club, a flourishing art house cinema organization that screens award-winning international fiction films once a month in the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson, with a program featuring guest discussion leaders for each film.
